What Will The Social Media Trends In 2017 Be Like?
This article, compared to most others on this website will be based out of a personal opinion. However, I will try to cover both sides of the story so you can create a picture yourself. Let´s get started.
So now to the big question- What Will The Social Media Trends In 2017 Be Like?
I’m torn on this because I see a lot of different trends appearing in social media. In my personal opinion, just because of the rapid growth we’ve seen this year, I have a feeling that live video is going to continue to grow and become one of the biggest – if not the biggest – social media trend in 2017.
I know many people who would argue with me on that and say that VR is gearing up to become the biggest trend in social media in the coming year. But the reason I’m hesitant to choose VR is cost.
I also don’t know if people are ready to fully embrace VR or completely understand it yet. Yes, social is constantly growing and changing and, regardless of platform or idea, there will be a learning curve in terms of understanding. And while I am totally on board with VR, and would love to try it out some day, I’m just not entirely sure on the cost and societal integration factor yet.
On the other hand, live video is popping up and being prioritized in algorithms on numerous platforms. Youtube and Twitch have always been great gaming platforms involving video, but I know that Facebook’s integration of live video took a swing at both of them.
Since then, Instagram and Twitter have begun the move to a full integration of live video, and Snapchat incorporates video as well (though it isn’t quite in the same way).
Live video is a great way to provide entertainment to social users and its popularity is leading to a spike in usage. I can only imagine that this will continue to grow and spread on the platforms it is currently on and, additionally, on new apps and platforms.
However, I feel that for live video – or any social media trend – to actually be beneficial in any way, shape, or form, social platforms need to focus more on innovation and branding themselves. Because many platforms are now working towards adding new features, the lines between them are becoming a bit muddied. Live video, sticker usage, gif usage…all of those are becoming more and more spread across different platforms.
But why use Snapchat if Instagram has live video, stickers, and filters? What separates one platform from another? Although I am an avid user across many social media platforms, I would hope that innovative features begin to spread and once again create a separation between social platforms.
Once more innovation is introduced, I believe that social media trends will really take off and become beneficial for the platforms and their user base.
