Search engine keyword research

The good news is that there are plenty of free keyword research tools out there that you can use that will help you identify the keywords your potential customers are searching for on search engines.

In this article, we’ve listed some of the top free keyword research tools to help you with this. This article will focus on listing these tools, but if you want even more detailed information, you can learn more about free keyword research tools here.

1. Google AdWords: Keyword Planner

This is the most obvious tool that people turn to do their keyword research.

And it’s a no-brainer, really. Among, search engines, Google had a market share of over 90% worldwide.

With that in mind, you would expect that Google understands the behavior of its users in extreme detail, and in turn can share this information in their tools.

And that’s exactly what Google does with the Google Keyword planner.

Google keyword planner

This is an extensive tool that gives you detailed information about what people are searching for, search volumes, and related keywords which help you discover new keywords that your customers are searching for.

This tool takes its information from the Google search engine, and then allow you to get valuable insights about your target audience and the keywords they are searching for.

Apart from sharing suggested and related keywords to your query, it also shows search volume of each keyword, competition, and suggested bid if you were to advertise with Google Adwords and target that keyword.

Google Keyword Planner is not the most advanced or complicated tool, but it is easy to use and gives you the most important information. Oh, and it’s free.

2. Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest is a tool that I frequently use because of its straightforwardness and easy-to-use interface.

Unlike Google Keyword planner, you don’t have to log in which saves a bit of time if you’re only going to search for one or two keywords.

Now, Google Keyword planner is good, but a problem is that the tool only has data from the Google search engine. Ultimately, this does not show the full picture of people’s search behaviors.

Ubersuggest keyword research

Ubersuggest, on the other hand,  provides you with keywords that are not available through the Google Keyword Planner. This is great if you are looking for further keywords and potentially more detailed keywords that you can use to rank for.

A good tip is to begin using Google Keyword planner, and then have a look at Ubersuggest to see if there are any keywords that Google missed.

Ubersuggest breaks down the keywords by letter but also allows you to search for keywords by specific countries which is good if your business only focus on specific countries.

3. Keyword In

Another great and free keyword research tool that you can use is Keyword In.

This tool specifically allows you to combine your keywords to get a list of potential keywords.

The tool is very straightforward and you only need to type in your keywords and then let it generate suggested keywords for you.

4. Soovle

Soovle is another keyword research tool that gives autocomplete suggestions of keyowords that you can use. Best of all is that you can switch among different search engines so you get diversity in your results.

While you can use it for Google suggestions, there are many other sources, including Yahoo, Bing, YouTube, Wikipedia and Amazon.

This tool is fast and  very easy to use, so anyone can use it. And ultimately, it will help you find a few good keywords that you canfocus on.

5. Google Correlate

As most people try to rank on Google, it makes sense to use tools that have been developed by Google as well.

Correlate is another tool from Google that see which keywords get searched together. With this information, you can begin to grow your keyword list, and in particular get a better sense of the long tail keywords your customers are searching for.

If you know a bit about search engine optimisation, you know that long tail keywords are extremely valuable and effective in SEO. And this tool comes in handy for this.

Using this tool allows you to broaden your search keywords, and ultimately create content around those search terms.

Unfortunately, though, because of low usage, Google Correlate will shut down on December 15th 2019.

Conclusion

It’s safe to say that having your website shown for search terms that your customers are searching for is crucial.

Many customers search for something and are ready to buy. But if your website doesn’t show up among the top results, they will never find you.

But in order to get seen at the top of your customers’ search results, you need to know exactly what your customers are searching for, and then optimise your website in order to ultimately rank for those search terms.

Hopefully, you found one of the listed tool helpful, and can start using one for a better understanding of the search behaviours your customers have.
